I. Better is Poor that Walks in His Integrity Pro 19:1 Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool. Pro 19:2 Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth. The thought is simple. It is better to be poor and honest than to be a slick talker and a fool. The word translated as perverse (vqe ‘iqqesh) literally refers to being ‘twisted,’ ‘distorted,’ or ‘crooked.’ The idea here is of a slick talker who is less than honest. The Bible calls such a one a fool. Two separate thoughts are at hand in verse 2. The word translated as knowledge (tedda‘ath) refers to ‘discernment,’ ‘understanding,’ or ‘wisdom.’ For one to be without discernment or wisdom is not good. One who hastens with his feet is one who is impulsive and undisciplined. Impulsive people are prone to folly and sin. They don’t pause and think through their impulse.
